This week we continued our usual class routine. Remember, week 15 is make-up week. We will have class on Wednesday to make up for holidays this semester, and watch a few presentation videos in class. When we meet Wednesday (June 9th) we can make plans for Thursday, which is also a make-up day for us.
Please remember to submit your written script or paper to me along with submitting your YouTube link to the class Canvas discussion area. I want to have your paper in hand before watching your presentation.
Thanks!

After our news briefings today, we talked about what we will do in class the next couple weeks. We will not have a mid-term exam in this class, so please use Mid-Term week to plan your next major project.
That project should be presented, uploaded to YouTube, and we will watch several of them during class time Week 15 (June 9th and 10th). While your paper presentation does not have to be an argumentative or persuasive presentation, it should be something more than simply a report or literature review. Your presentation should have a main point concerning a problem, issue or controversy that is worth learning about and important enough for you and the class to deal with.
Please aim for something between 10 and 20 minutes long, which would be about five or 10 double-spaced pages written out. Please do submit a script or outline to me before you give your presentation, so I can follow along and make notes as you give it.
Please prepare a proposal for your paper presentation next week and submit it to the class Canvas discussion area before 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 23rd for me to preview before we meet on April 28th. Look over your classmates’ proposals and feel free to make comments or suggestions on them in Canvas. We will talk about your proposals and topics when we meet in class.
Use "Your Name/Paper Proposal" for a topic title. Please do not upload a file for this discussion post. Instead, either type it in the box in Canvas or copy and paste it from another program on your computer. It makes it easier to read and respond if we don't have to open another file inside Canvas.
Please be ready for our regular Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day next time we meet, followed by news briefings and a chance to quickly review our topic proposals.
See you in class!

After our news briefings today, we moved on to Part 2 of our discussion on national identity and stereotypes. The topic we talked about is posted under "files" in Canvas. Please take a look there to refresh your memory and create a discussion post.
Use "Your Name/National Identity 2" for a topic title. Please address the topic you choose thoughtfully and thoroughly at some length (150-400 words). Make sure your post is completed before 11:59 p.m. Saturday, April 10th. Please do not upload a file for your discussion post. Instead, either type it in the box in Canvas or copy and paste it from another program on your computer. It makes it easier to read and respond if we don't have to open another file inside Canvas.
Then, please reply to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts with at least 100 words in an online conversation format. Replies to your classmate's posts should be complete before class time April 14th.
Please be ready for our regular Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day next week, followed by news briefings.
See you in class!

We took some time today to watch a few icebreakers on the big screen from our classmates, and give them some feedback about what went well and what could be improved.
Please continue giving feedback in the Canvas discussion area, providing comments for two classmates about some specific things that they did well in their presentation (at least two specific things per presentation), and also mention one area that could be improved.
Presenting information in English, and helping each other with feedback, are important elements of this class and this icebreaker assignment was a good way to get started doing that.
After we watched some presentations, we moved on to a class discussion about national identity. For next week, please also continue this discussion in Canvas.
The topic we talked about is posted under “files” in Canvas. Please take a look there to refresh your memory and create a discussion post. Use "Your Name/Identity" for a topic title. Please address the topic thoughtfully and thoroughly at some length (150-400 words). Make sure your post is completed before 11:59 p.m. Saturday, April 3rd.
Then, please reply to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts with at least 100 words in an online conversation format. Replies to your classmate's posts should be complete before class time April 7th.
We will be back to our usual routine of Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day, followed by news briefings next week. Be sure to bring your items for class.
See you next week!

News Briefings & Discussion
Remember, before our class next week on March 31st, please have your Icebreaker presentation completed, uploaded to YouTube, and the link to your YouTube video posted in our class Canvas discussion area.
In Canvas, when you post your YouTube link, please use "Your Name/Icebreaker" for a topic title.
We will do our regular Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day next week. however, because we will be watching some student videos during class time, we will not need to do news briefings.
I will supply a discussion topic after we have watched a few icebreakers.
See you in class!

News briefings ran most of the session
We talked more about our first presentation assignment due March 30th – the Icebreaker.
We also spent a few minutes going over details of the assignment as outlined by Toastmasters International. You should present your Icebreaker standing up and speaking toward the camera. We should be able to see you from the waist up. Please use a tripod or person holding your video camera/phone; don't sit in front of a computer and speak to a webcam for your presentation.
See you next week!

Our class got off to a good start with an online Zoom session of the entire class. After tracking first day attendance, we took some time to find out about the class and the instructor, as well as practice our Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day.
Next week, we'll be presenting News Briefings after our Word, Quote and Joke of the Day opening routine. Please coordinate which international news stories you'll be sharing with the class.
News Briefings should be interesting, current and internationally relevant. Controversial news that might lead to discussion or something that includes interesting language use are especially good choices. Be prepared to spend a few (3-5) minutes talking about your story and please don't just read the news article aloud. Make sure not to cover the same issue as a classmate.
Also, remember to have your Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day ready at the beginning of class.
Have fun!

P.S. As I mentioned in class, this book-->
is very helpful for improving English communication skills, especially for Korean English speakers. It is not required, but strongly recommended. English learners coming from other language backgrounds may have your own suggestions. Please share them with the class.
Thanks!
