Introduction to English Presentation (1)
NOTE: The word, quote, and joke of the day are not optional; they are mandatory. Each week, we will start class with these three items. Please make sure that someone new is assigned each week. If not, the person who did the duty the previous week will need to do it again.

2013.05.15 & 05.22
As we start to look toward our final persuasive project, we watched some inspirational examples of good speakers at work. First, we watched the movie SPEAK!, which follows contestants at the the Toastmasters International World Speaking Championships in the USA.
We also watched Susan Cain's TED talk about The Power of Introverts. We are continuing to share ideas and thoughts about persuasive speaking.
Students were asked to bring a one-page proposal about their persuasive speech to class with them week 13 (2013.05.29). The assignment details are here.
Persuasive speech topic ideas are here. Please use these suggestions to find a topic that means something to you and you can make your own.
See you in class!

We went over Chapter 4 in text through page 38-39. Continue next week in Chapter 5.
In the second half of the session, we selected a few interesting, informative presentations to watch as a class and gave helpful
feedback to our classmates (and ourselves).
Next week, in addition to going over the last few pages of Chapter 4 and beginningChapter 5 in the text, we will
talk more about persuasive presentations to be presented weeks 14 and 15.
Be thinking about your persuasive topics now.

Hi All,
First, 미안 해요.
I was very busy finishing off a major project during mid-term week, and while I thought I had everything taken care of for all classes, I just realized this weekend that I did not post the information about our informative speech assignment like I thought I had last week.
Because I was slow to post, please don’t worry about getting it done by class time this week. But we do need to get things done soon so we don’t fall too far behind. Please try to get your informative speech recorded (in front of a small live audience) and uploaded to YouTube by midnight Saturday at the latest.
In addition to the handout attached here, I also mentioned that you can get a lot of information on informative and persuasive speaking on my speaking resources page, as well as the Six Minutes website, the text, and elsewhere online. Instructions for emailing the link to your video as an entry to the blog are linked here. You can give feedback or suggestions by making comments on the blogs linked below.
In class, we will continue where we left off on 2013.04.17, moving on from Page 27 in Unit 3. Please go through the textbook halfway through Unit 4, so you will be ahead of the class when we get there.
We will talk more about our Persuasive Speech assignment when we meet.
Thanks!

After our weekly Word, Quote, and Joke, and getting our final icebreakers out of the way, we moved on to Chapter 2, discussing body language. signposting, and other speaking techniques.
We then moved on to a video froma master teacher, Patrick Henry Winston, who talked about informative speaking in a teaching context.
We will talk more about the video next week, along with chapter 3 in the text which deals more with visual technniques and start planning our next presentations.
Thanks!

2013.03.27 & 2013.04.03
We started off class 4-27 by acting shocked when the instructor asked us to video record our icebreaker speeches. He assured us that it was THE BEST WAY to see what kind of speaker you are, and we believed him, but we still acted as if we were shocked.
Then we discussed the “Avoiding Nervousness” reading from the end of chapter 1.
Then we did some icebreakers. Please watch yourself on the video recording (and classmates if you like) and evaluate yourself with the evaluation format at the end of the Toastmasters Icebreaker instructions. It will not be graded for quality, but you do have to watch yourself and you do have to email your self-evaluation to me at prof[email protected]. It is required. Don't forget to indicate your name and class time in the subject of your email: "Your Name," 9 a.m. (or 11 a.m.) self-eval,
Here they are:
Next week, back to the book and another speaking practice activity or two. Stay ahead of class in the textbook.
And be ready, you never know when JBH will assign an impromptu.
2013.03.20
This week, we went back to the book, talked about class/presentation ideas, and gave a brief introduction sample for starting a speech to the class.
For next week, prepare an excellent Icebreaker Speech (link here and below) and stay ahead of class in the book. That means go at least halfway through Chapter 2, reading, listening to the audio, and filling in answers in the book
We will be presenting Icebreaker speeches to the class, and I plan to video record them.
Be ready to speak to the class.
And don't forget the Word, Quote and Joke of the Day.

2013.03.13
1. Bad/Vision presentations in groups of three or four
2. Vote on best from each group, present to class.
3. Turn to book – who did Unit 1 including listening to CD? Should we play it in class this week or is that a waste of class time?
Go over Unit 1.
4. What kind of presentations do we want to do this semester? Business? Personal? Issue-oriented?
Bring a one-page proposal next week and we will talk it over.

Today's agenda
1. 5’s?
2. Word-Quote-Joke demo
3. Introduction of instructor and course
For next week, get the book, go through Unit 1 (including listening to audio), be ready for a quiz and/or to discuss material in class next week. Also, prepare a Bad/Vision Speech to present to classmates next week.
For the Bad Speech, the topic is not important. Just make sure your presentation style is BAD enough so that your classmates can see all your speaking faults.
For the Vision Speech, a possible topic is you, wonderful you, and your successful life after learning to speak and present perfectly in front of audiences of thousands of people. Visual aids are not necessary, but of course any props or aids will make your speech better.
Have Fun!
