Presenting in English (2) Winter 2020-2021
2021.01.13
In class today, we viewed three persuasive presentations from those that were submitted last night and gave the presenters some feedback from the entire class. From there, we moved on to wrap up Chapter 6 by looking at the model job interview as well as pronunciation practice and playing with sayings.
I will be available for meetings tomorrow via Zoom. If you have any questions or want to talk about the class, please email me in advance and make an appointment during our regular class time if possible.
Most of you have submitted your final projects for scores Tuesday. The only thing remaining to finish off this class is to use the Chapter 9 Evaluation Form on page 239 to guide you in making helpful, thoughtful comments on the speeches of two of your classmates in the class Canvas discussion area.
Thanks for a great class, and let me know if I can help you with anything in the future,

Students neglected to choose the Word, Quote and Joke person for today last week, so they got a chance to repeat their roles in class today. Next, we wrapped up chapter 9 with units on pronunciation practice and playing with sayings before moving on to chapter 6, which deals with Interpersonal Communication.
In chapter 6, we worked through a few activities in small groups, working on our perceptions of ourselves compared to others’ perceptions of us, along with our experiences with miscommunication, and how and why they occurred.
Please continue working on your persuasive presentation, due to be uploaded to YouTube and the link posted in the Canvas discussion area as well as the assignment folder before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12th., When we meet in class Tuesday, we will continue in chapter 6 from page 117.
See you in class!

In class on Wednesday, we took time to talk about the schedule for the remainder of our sessions. My basic overall plan includes viewing some student informative presentations today, then wrapping up Chapter 4 before moving on to Chapter 7 and 9 this week. You should be looking ahead at the Persuasive Speaking assignment in Chapter 9, which you will upload to the class Canvas discussion area and an assignment folder next week before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12th.
Tonight, make sure to use the Chapter 5 Evaluation Form on page 234 to guide you in making helpful, thoughtful comments on the speeches of two of your classmates in the class Canvas discussion area if you have not done so already. Please be sure to upload your informative speech link to the appropriate assignment folder in Canvas for scoring, as well as to the discussion area.
Please also make sure to post your link for the informative speech to the appropriate assignment folder in Canvas if you have not yet done so.
Thanks!

After today's Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day, we got a look at what our text had to say about using presentation aids in Chapter 4. We discussed No-tech, Low-tech, and High-tech aids, both visual and audio. There was a focus on using presentation software such as PowerPoint®, Keynote®, and Prezi® on our computers. We also took a look at one of the instructor’s top recommended sites for tips on speaking and presenting, Six Minutes: Public Speaking and Presentation Skills.
Please get your Informative Presentation uploaded to YouTube and post the link in the class Canvas discussion area before 11:59 p.m. today. We will be viewing a few student presentations in class on Wednesday and giving some feedback. We will also continue in Chapter 7 of the text, “Listen to Learn,” before moving on to Chapter 8 and our final major assignment, the persuasive speech.
Wednesday after class, you should use the Chapter 5 Evaluation Form on page 234 to guide you in making helpful, thoughtful comments on the speeches of two of your classmates in the class Canvas discussion area.
I will also want you to post the YouTube link to your informative speech to the Canvas assignment folder for scoring soon. We will talk about this in class. I'll be scoring the informative speeches this week and get to the Persuasive speeches after they are submitted early next week.
See you in class!

In today’s class, we wrapped up what was left of Chapter 5, spending some more time analyzing informative speaking organization.
Please use the model and suggestions in Chapter 5 to produce your own informative presentation, record it and upload the recording to YouTube, and post the YouTube link to the class Canvas discussion area before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. Use the subject heading “Your Name/Informative” for your Canvas discussion post.
When we meet in the Zoom room on Tuesday, we’ll be going over material on using presentation aids in Chapter 4 of the text.
See you in class!

Notice: We do NOT have class on Jan. 1, New Year's Day
In class Wednesday, we worked our way through Chapter 3, which covers putting the elements of your speech together. We looked at the model presentations and are building a short presentation of our own to upload to Canvas, based on the assignment from either Chapter 2 or Chapter 3 by Friday night (see details in 12.29 entry below).
Thursday, we took a look at Chapter 5, which will help us get ready for our major informative presentation, which needs to be presented, recorded to YouTube, and the link posted in Canvas discussion area before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5th. This presentation, unlike your other homework presentations, will be scored for quality.
All presentations from now on should show you on video standing, and we must see you from the waist up. You are required to use visual aids of some type for at least one of your major presentations (Informative Speech due Jan. 5th or Persuasive Speech due Jan. 11th/12th). Don't worry about technical details too much, but make sure we can hear and see you speaking on the video you upload. If we cannot see your visual aids clearly, please attach a copy to Canvas where you submit your YouTube address.
Over the weekend, in addition to getting your informative presentation planned, please use the evaluation forms on pages 231 or 232 to help you make thoughtful, helpful comments on the Chapter 2 or Chapter 3 speeches of at least two classmates before class time Monday.
To do:
1. Record Chapter 2 or Chapter 3 Presentation Project and upload it to Canvas by 11:59 p.m. Friday.
2. Use the evaluation forms on pages 231 or 232 to give thoughtful, helpful comments on the Canvas discussion area for the Chapter 2 or Chapter 3 speeches of at least two classmates before class time Monday.
3. Start making plans for your Chapter 5 Informative Presentation Project, which should be presented, recorded to YouTube, and the link posted in Canvas discussion area before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5th.

In class today, after starting off with our regular Word, Quote and Joke of the Day, we got to work on Chapter 2. The chapter looks at delivery techniques and we talked about posture, body language, using our voices effectively, and phrasing and pausing.
On Tuesday, (12-29) we will continue in Chapter 2, discussing vocal fillers, different modes of speech delivery, and looking over the model speech, along with pronuncitation practice. Please prepare by pre-reading and answering questions on your own before we meet.
We will move on to take a quick look at Chapter 3 next, before getting going on Chapter 5,which includes a presentation assignment to be scored for quality points.
Please start looking ahead and think about your preparation for this assignment, which will be due after the New Year’s holiday weekend.

Today in class, we started off with our regular Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day. From there, we moved on to making sure everyone was caught up on everything from Day 1 yesterday, in terms of the class web page, Canvas discussion site, and our first week presentation assignment. Check yesterday's post for details.
Then we got started on today's business, going through Chapter 1 of the text, with many good suggestions on dealing with anxiety when giving presentations. Students were reminded to get going on their two- to three-minute introduction speech, which they need to record, upload to YouTube, and share the link with the class in the Canvas discussion area. Make sure you post the link to your YouTube video before midnight Thursday. That way, we will have all weekend to post comments on two classmates' videos before we meet again next Monday.
When you comment on your classmates' videos, please make note of what you enjoyed, give a suggestion or two for improvement, and offer a positive overall comment about the presentation. Pay attention to the speaker's content and delivery.
When we meet Thursday, we will view a video about an international speaking contest that many students have enjoyed. See you then.
Thanks!

Our PIE class got off to a good start with an online Zoom session.
We started off by sharing some suggested Zoom classroom guidelines.
After tracking first day attendance, we moved on to a brief course overview, and the instructor shared information about the text for this semester. You can complete the exercises in the first chapter at this link. You can buy the text at the HUFS bookstore or online from these online vendors:
1. 교보문고
http://www.kyobobook.co.kr/product/detailViewEng.laf?ejkGb=ENG&mallGb=ENG&barcode=9780132861694&orderClick=LAG&Kc=

3. 알라딘
https://www.aladin.co.kr/shop/wproduct.aspx?ItemId=35930934
Make sure you get Speech Communication Made Simple 2, not book 1
Please get a copy of the text ASAP (as soon as possible).
Even before you get your own text, you can use the pages linked here to complete all written exercises in Chapter 1, and put together and record the self-introduction presentation project on pages 8-14. You may choose Method A or Method B.
Please record your self-introduction using a mobile phone or other video camera. Upload your introduction to YouTube, make sure the video is viewable by others, and post the link to the discussion area of the class Canvas site. (Invitation coming soon). Try to get your video posted by Thursday night, so your classmates have time to watch your introduction and make comments (see below).
On your discussion post, please use the subject "Your Name/Introduction". For this one time ONLY, you may present your speech into a webcam, if necessary. Future recorded speaking assignments will be done standing up, with the camera viewing you from at least the waist up. You also should have an audience of at least three people for future presentations, including the camera operator.
Please comment on at least two classmate's YouTube videos before class time next Monday.
Be ready to share your presentation with classmates in next week's session. We will be sharing some in class.
Also, remember to have your Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day ready at the beginning of class.
Tomorrow's Zoom class will be at the same place online. This will be our online classroom all semester. If you forget the Zoom room location, it's posted below.
Thanks!
JBH
P.S.
We will meet at our regular class time each day in this Zoom room online: 846 8345 5014.
You should have received an email from me with the classroom password. Please do not share it with anyone outside our class.
You can access Zoom discussions with your computer, tablet, or phone, but something with a big screen and a webcam will work much better.
See you in class!
