Finishing Thing Off (Entered 2017.12.01)
This past week (11.26 & 11.28) we produced and uploaded our final presentation videos (deadline is midnight 12.02). Don't forget to use the evaluation form on the instruction sheet to give thoughtful, helpful feedback to two classmates before we meet again in the classroom on December 5th and 7th. During that session, we will review some selected student videos in class and give live feedback, as well as wrapping up a few exercises from the text and elsewhere.
Don't forget the Daily Word, Quote, and Joke.

2017.11.14 & 11.16
After our Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day today, we continued working our way through Section 4 in the text. The instructor looked over everyone's vocal variety speech proposals while students were doing vocal variety practice exercises dealing with emphasis using emphatic expressions and stressing word sounds.
After reviewing the proposals, he reminded students that vocal variety was an important part of this final major assignment, and they should pick a topic and write a speech that clearly incorporates vocal variety in the composition.
Students asked for examples of vocal variety presentations and were directed to one of the instructor's favorite presentation websites:

Next week, we will continue working through Section 4 and may even touch on parts of Section 5 before using Week 14 to present and record our second major assignment. We will be back Week 15 to review some of those assignment speeches and give each other feedback in person. Everyone should expect to give helpful, thorough feedback to two classmates after uploading your speeches.

2017.11.07 & 11.09
In class today, after our Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day, we looked over our sound scripts from the tail end of Section 3 in the text and shared a few of the best ones. Moving on, we shared ideas and practiced the tasks dealing with emphasis from the section on Basic Techniques, Section 4 of the text.
Mid-session, we went over the instructions for our next Major Assignment, the Vocal Variety speech. Please bring a one-page proposal for your Major Assignment next week. We will be sharing them, discussing them, and handing them in. We will also be continuing in Section 4.
Always be ready for impromptus, too.

2017.10.31 & 11.02
This week we worked together on exercise to practice using chunking, pacing, stressing for emphasis, pausing and intonation to improve our presenting technique. We worked through Section Three in the text from page 38 to 43, and were left with a sound scripting homework assignment to complete for next week.
Please follow the instructions for the sound scripting tasks (1, 2, 3) on pages 43 through 46, along with Task 2 on page 46. Bring a hard copy of these tasks to class with you next week to discuss in class.
Also, get started thinking about your topic for the next major assignment, which we will again be recording and uploading week 14, the week of Nov. 28th & 30th. Instructions for that assignment are linked below. We will talk about it in class next week

2017.10.17 & 10.19
Like every session, this week we started off with our Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day. Then, while most classes were tense this week with exams, we had already gotten our tension taken care of the week before by completing our mid-term presentation projects. Week 8 we got sit back and enjoy watching a few videos from our classmates and giving them feedback during the session.
Please move on to Section Three in the text and be ready to go through it together when we meet Oct. 24th & 26th. Most of your presentations should be scored by Week 10 (Oct. 31st/Nov. 2nd).

2017.09.26 & 09.28
We started off this class with the usual Word, Quote, and Joke of the day before moving on to get clear about our upcoming major assignment to be uploaded Week 7 (2017.10.08-14)
In small groups, we discussed our proposals for our "Organize Your Speech" project, and then presented them to the entire class and the instructor for suggestions and help with developing our ideas.
We continued by looking over a chapter on Organizing and Outlining from the online Public Speaking Project text, as well as some supplemental web resources from that chapter.
Have a great Chuseok holiday, eat lots of 송편, and come back ready to present your amazing organized speech! You should present it to a small audience (at least three people), upload the video on YouTube and share the YouTube link in the discussion area of Canvas. Everything should be uploaded and posted before midnight Saturday, Oct. 14th. Before we meet as a class week 8, please give feedback to at least two classmates based on the evaluation sheet in the instructions for the speech. There are also some tips for that speech assignment at Six Minutes.
We will not have regular class Week 7; use that time to present and record your speeches. The classroom will be available for you to use at class time and I will be on campus. Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help with anything. We will meet again as a class the regular time Week 8.

2017.09.19 & 09.21
In class, we continued working on Sections 1 and 2 in the Book.
We also talked about our first Major Assignment, the 3rd Project from Toastmasters Speaking Manual. Instructions for the speech, whose objective is to "Organize Your Speech," are linked here. You need to be planning this now, because you will be uploading it to Canvas soon -- before midnight Saturday, Oct. 14th. Please create a discussion post with the subject heading "Major Assignment I: Organize Your Speech/Your Name/Your Presentation Title" when you upload. I would like you to give feedback to two classmates on their presentations using the evaluation criteria in the speech instructions before we meet to look at our creations during Mid-term Exam week.
Please be ready next week to present a brief proposal of your speech topic, which should include your outline and tentative opening, with as much detail as possible, and without presenting your whole speech ahead of time.

2017.09.12 & 09.14
For our next class meeting Sept. 19 and 21 please complete the exercises from Section 1, and be ready to give the Section a wrap-up look. Please be ready to talk about all of Section 1 in class, as well as move on to Section 2.
Please also use this week to quickly choose two presentations, give their beginnings a good look, and analyze them, using the terms and features we looked at in the text (introductions, openings, etc.). Present a typed report about your observations of these two beginnings in the class Canvas discussion area.
There is no length requirement for your report, but cover the features thoroughly for both the presentations you look at. What techniques did they use? How well did they follow the guidelines specified in the text? Was there something else that you noticed in their openings that was effective? Mention things you noticed, whether they are features mentioned in the book or not. We will talk about our observations in class.

2015.09.05 & 09.07
In class, we cracked open the text to Section 1 and looked at how to put together introductions and openings for a presentation or speaking event.
This week, please videorecord yourself giving an Icebreaker Speech, upload the video to YouTube, and post the link to our class discussion area on Canvas. Remember, you should be standing, and the video should show you from the waist up. You do not need an audience, but you may need to have someone hold your videocamera for you anyway. If you can do it another way, such as using a tripod, go ahead this time. Please use the Icebreaker instruction pages to give thorough feedback to two classmates. Every student should have feedback from two classmates.
For our next class meeting week 3 please complete the exercises from Section 1, and be ready to continue working from the book. Your video link and feedback should be complete before we meet again next week.

Our first day got off to a good start with students and the instructor introducing themselves to each other.
The second item on the day's agenda was demonstrating our regular daily routine for starting class with a Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day. Don't forget, someone needs to present those at the beginning of class each week. Please write the Word and Quote of the Day on the board or have them ready to go on the classroom computer when class begins on the hour. If one of these is your job and you are going to be absent, please find a replacement. If there is no replacement the week after you have taken one of the roles, it will be your problem (or pleasure) again.
