Presenting in English (1)

W-Q-J
We wrapped up Unit 10 this week, starting from page 135. Much of our session was a discussion about Julian Treasure’s TED Talk on listening.
Next week, we will have class on Wednesday and Thursday, June 9th and 10th, at our regular class time. On one of those days we will watch some presentation videos together and give a few classmates some live feedback. We will also take a look at Unit 12 next week. Hopefully, we can also do a few impromptus.
Don't forget to keep working on your final speech project, which should be video-recorded, uploaded to YouTube, and the link posted in the Canvas discussion area by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, June 5th. Details of that assignment are posted in the May 12th entry below. After submitting your video, be sure to watch and make comments on at least two of your classmates' presentation videos. Your comments should offer helpful, thoughtful suggestions about what they did well and what they could improve on. Make sure your comments are complete before class time week 15 (June 9th).
Have fun!

When we meet next week, we will continue in Unit 10, and move on after wrapping it up.
Also, please remember to keep working on your final speech project, which should be video-recorded, uploaded to YouTube, and the link posted in the Canvas discussion area by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, June 5th, a little more than a week from now. We started off class as usual with a word, quote, and joke of the day.
Then we discussed some tips about evaluations as we got started, going beyond the basic sandwich method for ways to help speakers and listeners improve their public speaking experience. Please review the linked page and learn how to use it. We will have more chances to give feedback to classmates this semester and this method can help both listeners and speakers learn more.
We next moved on to talk about our final speech project, which should be video-recorded, uploaded to YouTube, and the link posted in the Canvas discussion area by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, June 5th., a little more than three weeks from now.
We started by looking at the Organize your Speech assignment with info and examples from the Six Minutes Presentation site and then we continued by talking about the instructions from Toastmasters. Please refer to both these guidelines for more details.
The rest of the session was spent reviewing and discussing Unit 5 in the text, which describes challenges and successes. We wrapped up on page 65, with a discussion question about your biggest achievement so far.
Please continue this discussion in the class Canvas discussion area with a post between 150-400 words long before 11:59 p.m. Saturday, May 15th. Reply to two classmates with at least 100 words in each reply by class time next week. Please use "Your Name/Biggest Achievement" for a topic title.
We will not have enough time to go over every unit in the text this semester, so we will probably move on to units 10, and possibly 11 and/or 12 in our remaining time this semester.
See you in class!

1. W-Q-J
2. Quiz on Chapter 4 – Easy but useful.
3. We continued in Chapter 4, exploring what kind of liars we all are. We wrapped up on page 55.
4. Please continue the conversation on lying in Canvas with a discussion post explaining examples of a situation where it would be okay to lie and/or a situation where someone might be tempted to lie, but it would be a big mistake. You can write about one of these or both examples in detail. Try to come up with some true examples, if possible. Please do not just repeat the book examples or other examples online. Give it some thought and come up with your own example(s) in a Canvas post of some length (150-400 words). Please have your response to the question completed before 11:59 p.m. Saturday, April March 17th to give your classmates time to reply to your response. Please use "Your Name/Liar" for a topic title.
After writing your response, please reply to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts in an online conversation format. Replies to your classmate's posts should be complete before our regular class time April 21st. Your replies should each be at least 100 words long.
Also next week, please complete your major assignment (see details in #5 below). We will not have regular class next week (4-21); the time is reserved for you to prepare, present, and upload your presentation. However, I can be available for questions/conferences on Zoom. Please email me if you want to talk. I check my email once a day, so please give me at least 24 hours’ notice by email.
5. Major assignment – The Icebreaker
Here is the info from Toastmasters, as well as some helpful details from the Six Minutes presentation website.
Please present your icebreaker, upload the video to the Canvas discussion area under the subject “Your Name/Icebreaker” during mid-term week. This should be done by 11:59 p.m. Saturday night, April 24th. Use the evaluation questions on the last page of the Toastmasters Icebreaker instruction sheet to give helpful, thoughtful feedback to two classmates in Canvas before we meet as a class Week 9 (April 28th). On that day, we will watch a few videos, provide live feedback, and continue in Unit 4.
See you in class 4-28!

After our regular W-Q-J, we moved right in to Unit 3. The instructor noted that the late Hans Rosling, a global health expert who gave the TED presentation that Unit 3 focuses on, had some very interesting things, and surprising, things to say about human development around the globe.
Much of what Rosling shows is very different from what many people think is true. The entire TED talk on Global population growth from this Unit, along with his other TED talks about statistics and the magic washing machine are definitely worth watching if you haven’t seen them already.
We got into the the unit, discussing global population trends, global development, and the economics of happiness in pairs and with the whole class to get us started in the unit. Please go ahead and read, listen, and preview all videos in the unit before we meet next week.
In addition, of course, please make sure to videorecord your presentation based on the assignment on pages 49 & 50. Upload it to YouTube and be sure it’s shareable, not private, so we can see it. Get it uploaded and the link posted in the Canvas discussion area by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, April 3rd. Please use "Your Name/Inspired By" for a topic title.
In the video, you should be standing as you present, and viewers should be able to see you from the waist up. You do not need to present to a live audience, but please do not give your presentation to a webcam sitting in front of your computer.
Then, make sure to give feedback to two classmates in Canvas, addressing the points mentioned in item D on page 50. Your comment should be 150-400 words in length. Feedback should be complete before class time next week.
Have fun!

In class today, we started out as usual with our weekly W-Q-J.
We started class by taking a quick look at Canvas and the instructor asked if anyone was having troubles accessing, posting, or replying to the class Canvas discussions. No one mentioned any difficulties, and it appears that most people are posting and replying to the assigned discussions. If you aren’t; please do so. It will affect your homework score.
Then we wrapped up Unit 2, looking at vocabulary and other basic points as a full group and discussing more issue-based questions about superheroes and movies in small groups.
For next week, on page 35, please choose only one question (A, B, or C) and answer it thoughtfully and thoroughly in a Canvas post of some length (150-400 words). Please have your response to the question completed before 11:59 p.m. Saturday, March 27th to give your classmates time to reply to your response. Please use "Your Name/Movies" for a topic title.
After writing your response, please reply to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts in an online conversation format. Replies to your classmate's posts should be complete before class time March 31st. Your replies should each be at least 100 words long.
After that, please pre-read, pre-listen, and view all videos assigned in Unit 3 before we meet next week.
Also, be thinking about/preparing your presentation from page 50, which is due at 11:59 p.m. April 3.
Thanks!

We started off class this day with our usual weekly Word, Quote and Joke of the Day, before moving on to a quiz to make sure we had taken a look at the material in Unit 2.
We then took some time to discuss the topic in Unit 2, media influences, especially from movies. We looked at the first few pages of the unit together as a class.
After a short break, we split up into breakout rooms to talk about our response to the questions and topics on pages 27-32. Next week, we’ll come back and discuss the rest of Unit 2. We will also talk about the upcoming presentation on page 50, which will be due at midnight, Saturday, April 3rd.
This week in Canvas, please write a response to the Critical Thinking questions on page 32 (Letter B). Answer one or both questions thoughtfully, at some length (150-400 words). Please have your response to the question completed before midnight Saturday night, March 20th to give your classmates time to reply to your response. After writing your response, please reply to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts in an online conversation format. Replies to your classmate's posts should be complete before class time March 24th. Your replies should each be at least 100 words long. Please use "Your Name/Superheroes" for a topic title.
Thanks!

In class today, after our Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day, we took a quick quiz on Unit 1 to make sure we were keeping up with the reading. Expect these quizzes regularly. You should always pre-read, preview all videos, and listen to all audios before class. You will be warned which units to expect ahead of time.
We then talked about the different perceptions of stress and how to deal with it in our lives. I strongly recommend you check out the whole presentation by Kelly McGonigal on TED Talks. It is definitely worth the 14 minutes and 28 seconds it takes to watch the entire talk.
We wrapped up with some discussion topics on stress, including giving advice to people about how to deal with stress in their lives.
For next week, please accept your invite to the class Canvas website. Please write a letter following the instructions at the bottom of page 24 and paste it as a new discussion post to the class Canvas discussion area. Use “Your Name – Unit 1” for the subject (Topic Title).
Also, please pre-read, listen, view all audio files, and complete all individual answers in Unit 2 before we meet next week. Save the group discussion topics for class, and always be ready for a unit quiz.
See you in class!

Our PIE class got off to a good start with an online Zoom session.
We started off by sharing some suggested Zoom classroom guidelines.
After tracking first day attendance, we moved on to a brief course overview, and the instructor shared information about the text for this semester. You can buy the text from online vendors here in Seoul, such as
1. 교보문고
http://www.kyobobook.co.kr
2. 예스24
http://www.yes24.com
or
3. 알라딘
https://www.aladin.co.kr
Make sure you get Keynote 4, not 1, 2, or 3.
Please get a copy of the text ASAP (as soon as possible), and complete Unit 1 before we meet again next week. You should do all pre-reading, watch all videos require, listen to audio assignment, and complete all exercises in the book before class. The only thing left to do should be to discuss the topics in the book in class.
Also, remember to have your Word, Quote, and Joke of the Day ready at the beginning of class.
Next week's Zoom class will be at the same place online. This will be our online classroom all semester, unless and until we go back to face-to-face classes.
Thanks!
